SECOND VICTORY FOR BELGIAN TEAM WRT IN THE FIA WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
BMW M Team WRT, the Belgian squad based in Grâce-Hollogne, delivered another milestone at the 6 Hours of São Paulo: a second victory in Hypercar, the top class of the FIA World Endurance Championship and the highest level of endurance racing in the world. Limburg driver Dries Vanthoor (Belgian), alongside Kevin Magnussen (Danish) and Raffaele Marciello (Swiss), brought the BMW M Hybrid V8 home in first place. It's the team's second FIA WEC win of the year, following its historic one-two finish at Spa-Francorchamps in early May, and it puts BMW M Team WRT firmly in contention in both the manufacturers' and drivers' world championships, with four rounds still to go.
"We had a great weekend and a great race here in Brazil, where we claimed our second FIA WEC win of the year," said Belgian Team Principal Vincent Vosse. "It was a faultless race from the drivers and the guys in the pit lane, and the car was strong. The fight for the championship is on!"
For Vanthoor, the win came the hard way. Fighting through feeling unwell for much of his stint, he held his composure to bring the car home. "I never really experienced a situation like at the beginning of my stint so far. I just got in and I didn't feel well at all. I had to take deep breaths to try and just go to the end," he said. "BMW M Team WRT did a great job today. Strategy was amazing and the car has been phenomenal during the race. It's been a long time coming! We've been working really hard, and to get this is so, so nice. Big thanks to everybody working behind the scenes at WRT and in Munich as well!"
Team WRT's GT squad added to the celebrations with a strong podium finish for the #69 BMW M4 GT3 EVO of Dan Harper (British), Parker Thompson (Canadian) and Anthony McIntosh (American), out in their Brazilian-inspired livery for the occasion. This result was built, like the Hypercar win, on the work of the many Belgian engineers and Belgian team members behind the scenes."The team did a perfect job and found the optimal strategy for us. Everyone deserves this podium finish," said BMW M Works Driver Dan Harper.
Behind the wheel or on the pit wall, this is a Belgian story: a team founded by former Belgian racing driver Vincent Vosse and Belgian entrepreneur Yves Weerts (Weerts Group), based in Grâce-Hollogne, taking on the world's best manufacturers at the very top of endurance racing and winning.
