BELGIAN TEAM WRT ADDS TWO MORE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES TO ITS HALL OF FAME
Belgian racing team Team WRT delivered another strong performance in endurance racing this weekend, securing both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Endurance Championship titles in the Silver category of the GT World Challenge Europe at the Nürburgring. The titles, claimed by Matisse Lismont, Amaury Cordeel and Ignacio Montenegro, mark the 73rd and 74th championship titles in the history of the Bierset-based team.
Amaury Cordeel (24, Temse), in his first GT3 season, reflected: "I'm very happy with this championship title. There are obviously some mixed feelings because we lost first place today, but I think we gave it everything and stayed consistent throughout the whole season. We had a lot of second places, but I guess that's also how you win a championship, by being consistent and always scoring strong points. The team did a super job all season long as well so thanks to them."
Matisse Lismont (21, Leuven) added:"A very positive weekend! We dominated almost every session and took pole position in qualifying too. The race ended in second place, but I'm still very happy with the performance from everyone. We were aiming for the championship, so there was no reason to take unnecessary risks to fight for P1. One title is already in the books, and now we head to Zandvoort with Ignacio to try and secure two more!". Matisse and Ignacio are also currently leading both the Sprint Cup (two one-hour races with two drivers only) and the Silver Combined (Endurance + Sprint) championship in their category, with two Sprint races and one Endurance race still to go.
Also flying the Belgian flag this weekend was Charles Weerts (25, Aubel), who secured second place alongside South African teammates Kelvin van der Linde and Jordan Pepper. It is the crew's very first podium of the season, following a difficult start to the year. "I'm really happy that, in what has been such a difficult season so far, we've finally made it onto the podium. My teammates and the whole team did a great job and delivered a perfect race," said Weerts. With two Sprint rounds remaining, Weerts and van der Linde remain firmly in contention for the Sprint Cup title, a championship in which Weerts already holds a remarkable record of 20 race wins.
Team Principal Vincent Vosse summed up the weekend: "It was a positive weekend. I'm very happy with second place for Charles's crew, as well as another podium and the championship title for our young trio. They're having an incredible season. This title is thoroughly deserved. I'm super proud of my drivers".
Team WRT's busy season continues: the team is now entering the second event of a demanding six-week stretch of back-to-back races, heading next to Texas for another FIA World Endurance Championship round, where its Hypercar squad, BMW M Team WRT, currently leads the Drivers' Championship and sits P2 in the Manufacturers' Championship.
